Before she was a supervillianess, she was Dr. Harley Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Gotham’s Arkham Asylum. So the story goes, she volunteered to analyze the Joker while he was incarcerated at the asylum, became fascinated with him and fell in love. She helped him escape, but when he was defeated and badly beaten by Batman and returned to the Asylum, she took pity on him and assumed the role of her evil alter ego, Harley Quinn.
